SERVIS-1 in 2003 Eurockot`s Second Launch for a Japanese Customer The SERVIS-1 launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Northern Russia was successfully performed on 30 October 2003 injecting the satellite into a sun-synchronous orbit of 1000 km altitude. SERVIS is the acronym for "Space Environment Reliability Verification Integrated System" programme conducted by the Institute for Unmanned Space Experiment Free Flyer (USEF) acting on behalf of under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry of Japan. The objective of the SERVIS missions is to drastically reduce the cost of spacecraft compared to current cost by using high performance Japanese commercial parts and technologies. The final goal of the project is to establish a parts evaluation guideline and equipment design guideline to utilize the commercial off the shelf parts and technologies under the space environment so that they can be utilized for the future space applications. USEF developed SERVIS-1 under a contract to NEDO, a semi-governmental organization under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan.
